Foods with High Glycemic Index Levels Can Trigger Insomnia

A good diet and getting enough sleep is one of the main keys to living a healthy life. That way, maybe you get a better quality of rest. However, recent findings reveal that foods with high glycemic index can cause insomnia. Is that right?
The glycemic index is a method of rating that shows how quickly each carbohydrate source affects blood sugar. Each food has a different glycemic index value. The smaller, the increase in blood sugar levels after eating these foods will be slower.
If the sugar level is too high (hyperglycemia), it can certainly cause certain health problems. For example, headaches, feeling too tired, nausea and vomiting, to blurred vision.

The result, the researchers found that women who ate foods with high carbohydrate content were more at risk of developing insomnia.
There are certain types of carbohydrates in certain amounts that can increase sugar levels to varying degrees.
Refined carbohydrates, such as added sugar, bread, white rice, and soda contain high glycemic index and increase blood sugar faster. The researchers concluded that when blood sugar jumped suddenly, the body would react and release insulin.
As a result, a decrease in blood sugar occurs, but causes the release of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol which can disrupt your sleep.
Foods that contain lots of carbohydrates are included in high glycemic index levels and can cause insomnia when supported by the consumption of sugars and processed seeds.
On the bright side, women who consume more vegetables and fruits that have not been processed into juice are less likely to experience insomnia
This might be because the fruit does contain sugar, but fruit fiber slows down the absorption process which helps prevent spikes in blood sugar.
Foods with a high glycemic index have been shown to cause insomnia in menopausal women.
However, because almost all people, not only menopausal women, sugar levels increase dramatically after consuming high carbohydrates, this condition also occurs in almost everyone.
In conclusion, the cause of insomnia due to foods with high glycemic index is not only caused by carbohydrates, but also additional sugars.
The cause of insomnia can actually be influenced by what you eat. In addition to sugary foods and high carbohydrates, it turns out there are other types of snacks that you should avoid at night, such as:
  • Dark chocolate because it contains caffeine
  • Steak or red meat because it contains high fat
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy foods help increase body temperature and disturb sleep
  • One serving of french fries can cause heartburn
  • In addition, it is highly recommended to avoid certain types of food above three hours before going to bed so as not to disturb your sleep quality.
Foods with high glycemic index and certain types of food can actually cause insomnia. Therefore, from now on observing eating patterns is important to get a deeper sleep and wake up fresher the next day.
